On Thursday evening we went to the Grotto to enjoy its Festival of Christmas Lights. It was our first time there and what a great experience! In the winter darkness we passed by towering pine trees decorated with colorful lights. They also had speakers hung in the trees so we could hear readings from the gospel, like the annunciation stories & the nativity story. It was so pretty & festive with lots things to enjoy: a high school choir in the chapel, musicians, skits, & St. Nic walking around passing out candy canes. I think Nico enjoyed the puppet show the most.
On a side note, Dec. 6th is the Feast Day of St. Nicholas. We learned that the real St. Nic came from a wealthy family, but was orphaned at a young age. He obeyed Jesus' instruction to sell his posessions and give the money to the poor, sick, & suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God & was made Bishop of Myra while still young. Bishop Nicholas was known for his generosity, love for children, and concern for ships and sailors. It seems so fitting that Nico is named after person known for being a protector of children & helper of those in need. We were lucky to get a nice pic with St. Nicholas at the Festival. Let me tell you, it was a whole lot easier than getting Nico to pose with Santa at the mall... ugh!
